CREATION

•    two Mary’s were watching — went home and prepared some spices — then rested the sabbath
•    Jews ensure Roman sealing and guarding of the tomb

RESURRECTION
•    Sunday morning (the third day) the two Mary’s, along with Salome, brought spices and oil, wondering who would roll away the stone for them
•    they saw an angel come down, causing an earthquake
•    guards were afraid
•    women ran to tell the disciples and all believers; Jesus appeared to them on the way — in His body; not a ghost
•    the men refused to believe the women
•    Jews bribed the Roman soldier witnesses
•    40 days of appearances
•    two Christians on the road to Emmaus
•    first appearance in the room with disciples and believers — He eats fish with them

ASCENSION AND AFTER

MURDER OF STEPHEN
•    5 years later, a man named Stephen who had been given much power by God

•    teeth chomping, controlled by hatred
•    Stephen full of the Holy Spirit, looked up and saw the glory of God
•    dragged out of the city and killed with stones
•    Stephen prayed for their forgiveness before dying

2. Major Themes

CREATION  — God is the Creator; He speaks and it happens; Creation was GOOD; (two ways to live point 1)

HOLY SPIRIT — at beginning of creation; in conceiving baby Jesus; promised by Christ to come to them after His death; Stephen filled with the Holy Spirit

OBEDIENCE/DISOBEDIENCE — do not eat from the tree of knowledge; Christ’s perfect obedience; relate AUTHORITY

TEMPTATION — Adam and Eve tempted in the garden; Jesus tempted in the wilderness

SIN — Adam and Eve and the serpent enemy; relate DISOBEDIENCE; there is not a righteous man on earth who never sins (Ecclesiastes 7:20); Jesus: no disobedience, no guilt; (two ways to live point 2)

JUSTICE / JUDGMENT — necessary result of disobedience; price/penalty for wrongdoing; the price is too high for us (or angels) to pay; parable of unmerciful servant (Matthew 18); justice == fair (getting what we deserve); God’s justice on the rebellious Pharaoh; God’s justice must be fulfilled, because He is good; (two ways to live point 3)

CHRIST’S WORK
•    perfect obedience under His Father’s rule (two ways to live point 4)
•    dying to take our punishment and bring forgiveness (two ways to live point 4)

KING / AUTHORITY — Christ bought us / we are not here to do what we want to do or to be slaves of men; Christ is the perfect Master, even far beyond kings like David; a potter is sovereign over the lump of clay; Christ’s kingdom “not of this world”; God as ruler on the throne in our hearts; also, God as the perfect FATHER; death as king (Romans 5);

FEAR / ANXIETY — TRUSTING/CONFIDENCE IN GOD — He always keeps His promises (e.g., “you will surely die”); 2 timothy 1:7 (God has not given us the spirit of fear…); psalm 118:8 (better to trust in the LORD…)

SABBATH — God rested on the seventh day; we rest one day per week (Sunday); this routine rest is healthy for all people; believers have rest from our own work (Matthew 11:28; Hebrews 3-4)

BAD NEWS / GOOD NEWS — sin and justice / cross and mercy

  • We plan to start-up again in September. Further lessons could be GCP or chronology continuing after Adam/Eve. We would skip Hannah, Samuel, Saul, Jonathan, and Goliath, which we have already taught, and continue with a lesson on David, Uriah, and Bath-sheba and continue from there.
